after arriving in the german-speaking italian alps, home of the world's greatest mountaineer alive (reinhold messner, duh), i had the sudden urge to grow a moustache, drink lots of beer and eat lots of cured meats. and wear a funny hat, very similar to the one i bought in german-speaking brazil. oh, the germans! and the lady at the tourist office said as i left, have a vonderful day!

looking at a room to rent in lima. found a room advertised as "jumbo" (as opposed to the "tiny" room, which is occupied) for $300 a month.

this is perfect. i wasn't gonna bring a computer, but it's only 2 pounds, has a 7 inch screen, will allow me to upload pictures onto an external harddrive, connect to the internet, talk on skype, and is only $350!

ok, i have 49 pages written. this is half the length of my fucking thesis!
also: found a gov't thesis that was 271 pages long. it looked pretty complicated, but had lots of pretty diagrams. but still a bitch to read.

i just borrowed the photo book "inferno" by james nachtwey; it is horrifying and depressing. its a documentary of all these human created catastrophes/famines/wars-- kosovo, sudan, rwanda, chechnya, romania-- all photographed in brutal detail
